Staff Sergeant Danforth during this period was in charge of a six man wire team and responsible for establishing and successfully maintaining wire communications between a Headquarters Combat Command and four main front line task forces, and the added mission of laying and maintaining of an alternative line to a Tank Destroyer Command Post. Due to enemy artillery concentrations cutting wire on axis roads and vicinity of forward command posts, constant wire maintenance was necessary during which time Staff Sergeant Danforth and members of his crew encountered harassing small arm fire and enemy artillery and Nebelwefer fire. Staff Sergeant Danforth did personally lead and supervise the laying and maintenance of wire communications for four days and nights without sleep, using the wire crew in relays. Staff Sergeant Danforth’s conscientious contribution to the successful establishment and maintenance of important communication channels is highly commendable and reflect great credit on himself and the military service. The boat they were on had to return to a neutral country to avoid being attacked, so they docked in Holland. So while they were in Holland waiting for another ship to take them to America Hymie was born on April 17, 1917. I think they arrived in Chicago on June 7, 1917 because he was about six weeks old. If Hymie had been born on American waters he would have automatically become an American citizen but because he was born in Holland he had to apply for citizenship. I have his birth certificate and it's written in English, Dutch and German. |
