Milit-Beg* | 1942 | Meyer began military service in 1942 in the U.S. Army. He enlisted after His twin brother Isador was drafted. Isador was Meyer's commanding officer, they may have trained in the Mojave Desert. His daugther Carol described her father as a wheeler and dealer while he was in the service he would make money and send it home to his mother Katie and she would buy bonds with it. He was quite the character. Izzy and my father were in the U.S. Army Signal Corp., they would go behind enemy lines for communications. I believe the pictures we have of my dad were when he was stationed in Belgium. He said he spent time with a family there because they sponsored the guys. I don't think sponsor is the correct word, they would probably take them in and give them a meal and hospitality. My dad was very handsome and I bet he had girlfriends. I've seen some pictures of my dad taken in Europe with girls hanging all over him. My dad returned from the army with pistols and memorabilia. German swords and things of that nature and I know that Izzy did as well. I believe they brought it all back to try to make money here in the states, but my mother made him get rid of all the pistols. He did keep a couple of the knives but I don't know if Izzy kept the ones he brought back. |
Milit-Serv | 27 December 1944 | Meyer was awarded a Bronze Star medal during the Battle of the Bulge. The following is the award citation: CITATION FOR AWARD OF BRONZE STAR MEDAL STAFF SERGEANT DAVID D. DANFORTH, 36302170, 149th Armored Signal Company, United States Army, distinguished himself by meritorious service in connection with military operations against the enemy during the period 16 to 27 December 1944 in the vicinity of Medernach, Luxembourg. Staff Sergeant Danforth during this period was in charge of a six man wire team and responsible for establishing and successfully maintaining wire communications between a Headquarters Combat Command and four main front line task forces, and the added mission of laying and maintaining of an alternative line to a Tank Destroyer Command Post. Due to enemy artillery concentrations cutting wire on axis roads and vicinity of forward command posts, constant wire maintenance was necessary during which time Staff Sergeant Danforth and members of his crew encountered harassing small arm fire and enemy artillery and Nebelwefer fire. Staff Sergeant Danforth did personally lead and supervise the laying and maintenance of wire communications for four days and nights without sleep, using the wire crew in relays. Staff Sergeant Danforth’s conscientious contribution to the successful establishment and maintenance of important communication channels is highly commendable and reflect great credit on himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Illinois. S/Sgt. David D. Danforth Onarga, IL Crew Chief T/5 Corp. Robert E. Sayles Grand Rapids, MI T/5 Corp. Isadore Gould Chicago, IL T/5 Corp.
