Milit-Beg* | 5 March 1943 | Jerome began military service on 5 March 1943 drafted and inducted into the army.
I received my basic training in Kearns, Utah. I was trained as an infantry man until I guess they wanted to know what branch of the service or from your schooling records what you were qualified for and at that time I was also going to a pre-pharmacy school. So it more or less pushed me into the medical field. And then from there I went to Springfield, Missouri and I was trained as an 861 a Medical Technician.
SI: When do you think you were inducted into the army?
JN: I guess in the summer of 1943 and after I passed my training in Springfield, Missouri I was fortunate enough to go to a primary training school in Orangeberg, South Carolina. You were sent to wherever you were needed and I guess there were openings in this primary training school the army operated in Orangeberg, South Carolina.
SI: Did you train other soldiers there?
JN: No I was strictly a Medic. There were only six of us. We had two flight surgeons and six Medics and I was one of the medics.
SI: Were you attached to a certain unit?
JN: I was attached to the Air Force so I wore an Air Force patch.
SI: How long were you in South Carolina?
JN: I was stationed there until they closed the school. However, before they closed the school in late 1944 the army was fighting the Battle of the Bulge in Europe and they needed Medical Technicians 861. There was an urgent need for 861's and I was a 861 so I was called up. I was ready to go to Europe. I lived off the base, I rented a room. In fact we all rented rooms in town. I cleaned up all my affairs, all my bills and I told the people I rented the room from that I was leaving. I had packed up and was ready to be shipped out. I had my duffle bag packed and everything ready to go but then they didn't need any more 861's. I had to unpack and I stayed where I was. I had to double back and re-rent my room. I was stationed in South Carolina until they closed the school. I never got higher than a PFC only because there was a sergeant, a corporal and three PFC's and I was one of the PFC's and I could never advance. Although I lived like an officer because I lived off base and I got sustenance and allowance for my room and board, I was just an enlisted man.
SI: Did you stay in South Carolina until the end of the war?
JN: I stayed in South Carolina until they closed the school and from there I was transferred to Maxwell Field, Montgomery, Alabama. Now that was an Air Force Base.
SI: Do you think that might have been in the middle of 1944?
JN: No I think the war was over. Prior to my leaving we had stopped training American cadets and then we got in French cadets. They were training them for the nucleus of the French Air Force. Now we had them for about 9 months or a year. And then I had to start learning French. We had books and we had to learn French because many of these young cadets who were coming did not speak English. Some did, some didn't. So we had to learn some French words not only the enlisted personnel but also the Flying Instructors because they had to talk to the students in French. So we had the French program. We were one of the few schools to train the nucleus of the French Air Force.
SI: Then you wound in Alabama?
JN: I would up in Montgomery, Alabama and from there I was discharged from the army.
SI: When do you think that might have been?
JN: Sometime in 1945. |
