Milit-Serv* | | Myron Pogodin Shot Down On 19th Mission during World War ll By Dorothy Drilich
Myron Pogodin's maternal grandmother, Feiga Rywka Piatkowski Gutfarb and my paternal grandmother, Chinka Piatkowska Imjak were sisters. My cousin Myron was born June 6, 1919 in Zambrow, Poland, in the Northeastern part of Poland, with the name "Mnachem Majer" Pogodin. He arrived in New York City September 15, 1935 traveling with his mother Frieda Adele Pogodin. Myron was naturalized with a derivative citizenship (under his father-Isadore Pogodin's citizenship granted in 1936) on November 1, 1943 while serving in 578th Technical School Squadron, Miami Beach, FL. The derivative citizenship is given to children under 18 years of age of naturalized citizens. For those serving in the armed forces during World War ll, derivative citizenship past the age of 18 was granted to accelerate the naturalization process. Myron Pogodin enlisted when the World War ll broke out-before the US got into the war-on November 11, 1940, believing it was his duty and honor to fight Hitler and the Nazis. His training was in Jackson Barracks, Missouri where he volunteered for the Air Corps and then was sent to Texas and Florida before he was sent by troop ship to Wellington, England. Serving as a belly gunner on the bombers, his area was from the tail of the plane to the front and everything on the side of the plane. Myron would have to remove his parachute due to the tight quarters in the belly gunner seat. All of his missions were over Germany. He was bombarding for about 18 months before being shot down. He and the rest of the crew of the "Windy City" were shot down on his 19th mission south of Liege, Belgium escaping to German-controlled France. They were returning from a bombing mission to Schweinfurt , Germany. Schweinfurt was the center of Germany's vital ball bearing production and one of the most heavily bombed cities of the Reich. The ball bearings were used in military planes, tanks, torpedoes and other weapons. They were shot down on February 20, 1944. The Missing Air Crew report dated February 21, 1944 noted the last radio contact was just past Leipzig and the plane came under heavy enemy antiaircraft shooting. According to the Military Intelligence Missing Aircraft Report, dated September 29, 1944 they were went down over Liege, Belgium. They bailed out of the plane using parachutes. Once they landed, the crew got together quickly and buried their parachutes. Using their compasses, they knew they had to get out of German -occupied Belgium as fast as they could. They had to stay off the roads, and traveled by night staying hidden during the day in order not to be seen and hiding in barns or wherever they could. Once they arrived in France, they knew they had to go to the priest's house who got them in touch with the French Underground who came and took care of them-hiding and feeding them, and caring for those who were hurt, including Myron who had a head wound. The crew tried to escape to England via Spain but they were unable to get over the Spanish border, and their guide ran away leaving them on their own. Myron being born in Europe and knowing Polish, German and some French, told the others to keep their heads down and follow him. They had to go all the way back to Paris and then the Swiss border and crossed Switzerland. It took them about six-seven months from the time being shot down to arrive in Switzerland. They stayed in Switzerland until France was liberated. Once the Allies liberated France they were transferred back to France were Myron was put in the Intelligence Division-G-3. With Myron's linguistic capabilities he would interrogate the German escapees who claimed to be Jewish. Myron was based in Paris until the end of the war. |
